Steps to celebrate Ganesh Chathurti at Home

Ganesh Chathurthi or Vinayaka Chathurthi is a Hindu festival that is celebrated to acknowledge the birth of Lord Ganesh. It is often 10 days long and involves installing a Ganesh idol in one’s home or space of celebration. Ganesh is known to be the God of good fortune. However, not everyone has the opportunity to celebrate this auspicious day with a community of people and have to often resort to carrying out the puja in their own homes or space. Therefore, let us help with the things that one needs to keep in mind to successfully carry out the puja at home.

Worshiping the idol of Lord Ganesh

You want to start the process by cleaning your entire space to have a clean and pure environment to welcome Lord Ganesh. After cleaning thoroughly, you can bring in a clay idol of Lord Ganesh. Arrange all your ganesh chaturthi pooja items in place and worship Lord Ganesh by offering him flowers and modak.

Pooja Viddhi:

Next, place the idol on a risen platform or stage and place five kinds of flowers on his feet. Then wash his feet with holy water. Offer him some water and proceed to give him a holy bath. You can use a mixture of curd, sugar, honey and ghee and end It with pure water and offer him new clothes. Next you can get yourself a pandit who can chant the correct mantras and perform sixteen of the rituals that are to be done for Ganesh Chathurthi.

Aarti:

This is a very important step and the puja must be honored with aarti.

Prasad and Bhog:

As is known that Lord Ganesh was a big fan of Ladoos and Modak, these are often offered to him and then distributed as Prasad. Usually about 21 sweets are offered to Lord Ganesh as Bhog.

Visharjan:

The festival ends after 10 days when the idol is taken by the family to be immersed in a water body. This is a fun tradition and is often accompanied by music and holy chanting.

Ganesh Pujo, like every other celebration of our divine gods, are a big occasion with requires a lt of devotion, effort and hardwork to make it happen. More often than not, everything that goes into these preparations end up polluting the environment, the very nature that god has given us. This Ganesh Puja, let’s give a little back to our environment with a little bit more effort and a lot of care. This DIY clay craft makes a eco friendly ganesh idol that will definitely be adorable, as you’ll put all your love and devotion into it and will also be a sustainable option for the planet that we live in. Therefore, without further ado, let us go through the steps and know how to get started.

1.      We take out our clay and thoroughly mix it with water to form a firm dough that we then cut into pieces.

2.     Make a base with the first piece and do so by flattening it out.

3.     For the torso, roll a golf ball size sphere and attach it with the base using a few drops of water or a toothpick.

4.     Make rolls for the arms, legs and the truck of Lord Ganesha. Attach them to the body using drops of water, two from the top end of the torso, and two above the base, but attached to the bottom of the torso. Make sure to shape the blessing arm properly to ensure Lord Ganesha has his iconic pose.

5.     Make a smaller sphere and place it on top of the torso for the head. Attach the other roll for the truck along this sphere. Curve the truck as per your liking.

6.     Make tiny balls for his features like his ears, eyes and most importantly, his Ladoos! Again, use water as glue.

This is the step for detailing, ne can use a toothpick or knife or proper clay tools to give Lord Ganesha ornaments and a stole etc.

Why Should We Have an eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi

eco ganesha

Ganesh Chaturthi is a wonderful festival celebrated for 10 days to worship Lord Ganesha. It is a time to bask in the festivities and fun. 10 whole days of family, friends, sweets, good food, prayers, and gifts, until the Ganesha idol is immersed in water on the last day.

Unfortunately, many of the festivities we do can lead to immense harm to nature and the environment. A festival that celebrates righteousness, virtue, morals, prosperity and blessings should not lead to harmful effects to our Earth.

These are a few reasons why we should opt for eco-conscious.

● Idols – Every year, a large number of Ganesha idols are immersed in the lakes, ponds and seas. Since these idols are made of toxic chemical colours and plaster of Paris it causes significant harm to the water bodies and marine life. It is crucial to go for eco friendly ganpati idols to save the Earth. Go for clay ones with organic colours.

● Noise pollution – Music is wonderful but excessive amount of  noise can cause disturbances to schools, hospitals, neighbors etc. Try to be considerate and stop the music by 10 p.m.

● Plastic – With a plethora of yummy foods and sweets everywhere, the use of plastic to serve them can become problematic. Opt for eco-friendly options like banana leaves instead.

● Energy consumption- Festivals call for lights. As beautiful as they look, too many lights can lead to over-consumption of energy. Exchange heavy lights for  CFL lights which require lesser electricity and money.

This is why it is so important to consider being eco-friendly this festive season. We can still enjoy and celebrate a wonderful Ganesh Chaturthi while being mindful about our choices.

5 Types of Eco Friendly Ganesha Idols

Ganesh Chaturthi calls for buying and decorating eco friendly Ganesh idols at home, enjoying delicious food, sweets, music, lights, and the immersion of  the idol on the tenth day.

But as the idols are curated with Plaster of Paris, harmful chemical colours, plastic decorations and other such non-biodegradable substances, the harm caused to the environment during this festival is overwhelmingly significant.  So this year, consider going eco-friendly.

Here are some unique and innovative types of eco friendly ganesha idols you can go for, this festive season, and become an eco conscious individual.

● Clay – This is the best option to go for if you want beautifully detailed eco friendly Ganesha. Traditionally, clay has always been in use to make idols and it is a natural, beautiful way to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi.

● Paper mache – This is a more innovative option. Paper mache is decomposable and provide a soft dough to make beautiful idols.

● Plant a ganesha! – Made up of soil, fertilizers and seeds, this form of Ganesha idol became quite popular. Instead of immersing, this is watered down so that it dissolves into the earth and grows into a sweet little plant!

● Play Dough – It is possible to DIY ganpati idols with play dough. You can even make it a family bonding time at home making the idols.

● Chocolate! – It might sound a little absurd. But it is a unique and innovative way to make an idol. A Baker crafted this back in 2014. This idol is immersed in milk instead of water at the end of the 10 days and provide an extremely eco friendly option.

Instead of contributing in hazardous waste going into our water bodies in bulk, every year, contribute in protecting the earth and nature this festive season with these eco friendly idols.

Why is Eco-Friendly Ganesh Celebration an Urgent Necessity?

eco friendly ganesha

A recent trend has been observed in the last few years in buying eco-friendly Ganesh idols in a large part of the country. It is a very positive sign that the attitude of the people is taking a good turn and they are becoming more and more sensitive towards nature. Now, some pieces of evidence should appear as the reason as to why we should recalibrate our ways of traditional celebration and move towards a new normal.

A recent survey has stated that at least 150 million people in India inhale air that is 10 times worse than the safe air quality standard as per WHO. Are the statistics not enough to raise our concern and bypass this overt callousness? The POP materials that are used to make Ganesh idols cause severe harm to the environment at the time immersing those idols in water. The synthetic colors that are used to paint those idols are polluting the water resources like anything and thus leading to various diseases, food poisoning, and damaging the ecosystem.

After all those facts and numbers, our wisdom should prevail in the form of our susceptibility to our nature. We should make a bold choice to shift our focus towards eco-friendly Ganesh idols as already shown by some sensible people. There are other reasons why we should plan an eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi.

The materials that are needed to make eco-friendly Ganesh idols are easily available and at the same time very cheap also. Take, for instance, betel leaves, cow dung, clay - getting hold of all these things are as easy as ABC. Moreover, when you make eco-friendly Ganesh at home, a collaborative effort of every family member creates a strong communication between them and creates a homely atmosphere.
