Ganesh
Chaturthi is one of the major festivals of India and the grandeur of this
festival will catch anyone off-guard who has not seen such magnificent
celebrations in their lives. India, on a large scale, especially Maharashtra,
shows their exemplary skills to arrange every part of the Puja starting from
pandals to the idols. The animosity towards nature emanates at the time of
immersion.
Every
year, the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi ends with the immersion of huge Ganesh idols, made of Plaster of Paris, into the natural sources of water like
rivers and ponds thus leading to the substantial amount of contamination to the
water bodies. At this juncture, when the ecological balance of our environment
is continuously whittling away, the unstinting use of harmful chemicals should
be staved off and the making of eco-friendly Ganesha should come underway.
1. Plant eco-friendly Ganesha
A Mumbai
based artist reinstated the concept of eco-friendly Ganesha celebration by
creating a Ganesh idol with red soil and fertilizer and inserts some plant
seeds into it. There is no need to immerse the idol and this would be converted
into a plant someday. That is the way to channelize our sustainable efforts to
celebrate eco-friendly Ganesh Chaturthi.
2. Chocolate or Candy Ganesha
For many
years the idea of making Ganesh idols with chocolates or candy wrappers is
doing the rounds. This idea is very unique and without bothering about the
pollution this can be distributed among children.
3. Fish friendly Ganesha
Another
idea that has become trendier in recent days is to make Ganesha idols with clay
only and decorate the idol with various fish-friendly items, for instance,
corn, wheat, and fish foods. To paint the idols, turmeric, Chandan, or
vegetable powder can be used.
